1. Not Understanding Audience
Who are you writing your blog content for? If the answer is “I don’t know,” then you may want to regroup. You need an in-depth profile of the personas you’re trying to attract through internet marketing, which provide a deep understanding of their pain points, priorities, demographics and level of sophistication. Once you know whom your developing content for, it becomes easier to develop valuable content. After all, it’s about what they want to consume…not about what you want to say.
2. Not Tracking Metrics
While it may seem like Big Brother, it’s not. It’s business. You can track virtually everything going on with your website, social media and interactive marketing with the right tools. You only need to use them. If you’re using marketing software like HubSpot, it will do most of the work for you. Data doesn’t lie and it will only help you be a better marketer.
3. Not Having Content in Queue
You should have at least a weeks worth of blog content ready to go at all times. Why? Murphy’s law, that’s why. Do you intend to take a vacation? Are you immune to disease? Nope, so be prepared. You’ll thank me later.
4. Not Having a Content Calendar
So how do you keep content in queue? A calendar. It’s all too easy to forget to update your content calendar when you’re responsibilities include more than content creation. Boom, you’re under the gun to create a blogpost…but about what? Invest the time to create a calendar and keep it updated. It will reduce the firedrills and keep your content flowing.
5. Not Reading Other Blogs
Look you don’t have to be an experienced writer to blog. But you do have to be able to piece together a cohesive thought. And if that is a concern, then maybe you can glean some tips from other blogs. Yes, learn from others. See what they write about, examine how they write. Look at the comments. Pick up tricks of the trade by studying the work of others. So now you can scour your personal favorite blogs and call it research. Nice.
