Increase sales with keywords. And other myths.

Keywords are not content. This bears repeating. Keywords are not content. Current Internet marketing trends would lead you to believe that all marketing problems are solved with the application of keywords. Need to increases leads? Add more keywords to your blog. BZZZZT. Wrong. Keywords are a tool, not a solution. They are a means to an end – just like a brochure, a video or a TV commercial. If we told you that by creating more and more brochures your marketing problems would be solved, you’d seriously question our collective sanity. So why the rush to stuff your website and blog with keywords?
We prefer a more tried and tested approach: common sense. First let’s establish what your prospects (and existing customers) are looking for. Answers. Yes, that’s it. They want answers. It’s your job to provide those answers in the form of content – current, relevant content. This content can take many forms. Text, videos, podcasts, webinars, etc. But regardless of the form it takes, if you are creating current, relevant content that answers your prospects questions, and you title this content clearly, you will inevitably use words and phrases that your prospects are using to find the answers to questions that bother them so. These are keywords. And if you develop great content, title the content appropriately and promote it clearly, then keywords will take care of themselves. Mostly. It is nice to refer to keyword tools and analytics to act as a litmus test to keep you on track. But don't fall into the keyword trap. Stay focused on solid content and support with appropriate keywords and you'll be just fine.

What is your experience with Inbound Marketing? How have you used keywords or content to your favor?
