With the big push toward better content – content that engages and converts – many online marketers are rushing toward a quantity vs. quality approach. While certain aspects of Content Marketing require a certain volume of content production. The priority should always be on quality rather than quantity.
So how do you develop better content?

Understanding who you are communicating too is key. That fundamental truth has not changed. However, many have lost this focus. A deep understanding of your organization’s audiences will provide the ability to hone content to their needs. It will enable you to create content based on what they want to hear, instead merely relying on what you want to say.

How do you get to know your audiences?

There are a variety of ways to uncover audience needs. First, and easiest, is to ask them directly. Create a survey. Host it on your website. Distribute it via mail. Hand it to them directly. Ask them what they want to know about your products/services. Ask them how they’d like to receive it. Videos, static content, mobile apps…whatever. Don’t make assumptions, just ask.

Or, engage a research organization to dive in deep. Let them do what they do best and create a formal research program aimed at uncovering audience content needs. Sure, it can cost money. But will that help you from wasting money in the future? Probably.

What do you do with your newfound knowledge?

Now you have the foundation for creating relevant content. You’re not guessing anymore, instead you’re working from a position of knowledge. Now you can focus your objectives, focus your strategies and focus your content tactics on only those things you know will create value.

What do your audiences what to know about your products or services? If you don’t know why haven’t you asked?
